Enabling Improved Clinical Outcomes Tracking for Youth with Feeding or Eating Disorders (EPSI ChAT)
KEY INFORMATION
- This project is recruiting participants to evaluate the validity of a new eating and feeding disorder assessment for children and adolescents.
- Your and your child's participation in this survey is completely voluntary.
- You will be asked to complete a few screening questions to determine your child's eligibility for the full survey.
- Your participation for the screen will take approximately 5-10 minutes. If your child is eligible based on the screening questions (see below for eligibility criteria), you and your child will be invited to complete a survey. More detailed information on the procedures can be found below. The survey will take you and your child approximately 60 minutes.
- Your and your child's participation will take approximately 70 minutes in total.
- Risks include experiencing mild discomfort while completing the survey.
- There are no direct benefits to you or your child. However, we anticipate this study will benefit mental health assessment for children.
- Your and your child's alternative to participating in this research study is not to participate.
INTRODUCTION
The Department of Psychology at the University of Kansas supports the practice of protection for human subjects participating in research. The following information is provided for you and your child to decide whether you wish to participate in the present study. You should be aware that even if you agree to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time without penalty.
We are conducting this screener to determine whether your child is eligible to participate in a research study to develop and validate a version of the Eating Pathology Symptoms Inventory (EPSI) suited for children aged 10-18 years old, the EPSI: Children and Teen (EPSI ChAT). This screen will entail completion of a brief online survey and should take approximately 5-10 minutes. Your and your child's eligibility to complete the survey portion of this research study is based on the screen. To participate in the survey, your child must:
(a) Be aged 10-18 years old
(b) Be fluent in written and spoken English
(c) NOT have a diagnosis of an intellectual or developmental disability that would prevent them from taking a survey
(d) NOT have a reading-based learning disorder
AND
(e) NOT have a current medical condition that might interfere with appetite or body weight (e.g., cancer, thyroid conditions, diabetes mellitus, pregnancy).
If your child is deemed eligible, you and your child will be redirected to the full online survey that will take approximately 60 minutes. You or your child may choose not to complete the follow-up survey. If your child is NOT deemed eligible, then you will be directed to the end of the survey. However, we are an active research lab and are happy to keep your name on file, in case your child may be eligible for a future study.
The content of the screen and survey should cause no more discomfort than you or your child would experience in your everyday life or in routine mental health assessment procedures. Any questions that make you or your child uncomfortable for any reason may be skipped without penalty.
Although participation may not benefit you or your child directly, we believe that the information obtained from this screen and survey will help us recruit participants for a study that we anticipate will help us develop a comprehensive assessment to allow clinicians to detect eating and feeding disorder symptoms in children and adolescents early and accurately. Your and your child's participation is solicited, although strictly voluntary. Your and your child's name will not be associated in any way with the research findings. You and your child's identifiable information will not be shared unless (a) it is required by law or university policy, or (b) you give written permission. Only research staff will be allowed to view or handle the information obtained or otherwise be involved in the research process.
It is possible, however, with internet communications, that through intent or accident someone other than the intended recipient may see your response.
You and your child will not be paid for taking the eligibility screen.
If your child is eligible, then your child will be paid $30 for your complete participation in this study (screen and survey). Payment will be provided via Clincard or gift card. We will ask for your social security number in order to comply with federal and state tax and accounting regulations. We will ask for your and your child's first and last name, mailing address, and child's date of birth (DOB), which is required to receive payment.
We will invite you to provide an email address in the screener. This is not required to participate in our research study, but providing a valid email address allows you to make use of the Save and Return Later feature within the REDCap online survey platform so that you can pause the survey at your leisure and complete it later.
- How does Save and Return Later work? You can click Save and Return Later on any of the survey pages and receive a Return Code, unique to you. You will then receive an automated email from REDCap with your survey link which will require your Return Code to access your original survey.
We will not contact you for reasons unrelated to this research study.
Please note that if your and/or your child's responses are found to be fraudulent, you will not be eligible to proceed with further study procedures or to receive compensation.
If you would like additional information concerning this study before or after it is completed, please feel free to contact us by phone or email at (785) 864-8830 or eatstudy@ku.edu.
In addition to the research team, this study's research records may be reviewed by CMH Office of Research Integrity at Children's Mercy - Kansas City, and by departments at the University of Kansas and Children's Mercy - Kansas City responsible for regulatory and research oversight. Information obtained from this study will be kept a minimum of seven years for publication purposes, as researchers are required to keep information this long for verification purposes. You and your child will not be identified by name in any publication of the research results.
Please select whether or not you would like yourself and your child to participate. Clicking 'yes' indicates that you are at least 18 years old, and that you are willing to participate, and to allow your child to participate in the study. If you have any additional questions about your rights as a research participant, you may call (785) 864-7429 or write the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP), University of Kansas, 2385 Irving Hill Road, Lawrence, Kansas 66045-7563, email irb@ku.edu.
